The two solve different problems. Boxes and skeletons tell you about contacts you are looking at; the 2D radar tells you about the ones you are not. Most of what kills you in a hundred-player server arrives from outside your monitor, and a glance at a radar is cheaper than sweeping your view around to check.
The failure mode is watching the radar instead of the game. Treat it as something you check between engagements — before committing to a rotation, before crossing open ground, after a fight when you want to know whether a third party is closing. During a fight, the overlay in front of you is the more useful surface.
Vehicles move far faster than infantry, so a contact that was irrelevant when you last looked can be on top of you shortly after. That is the situation the radar is genuinely best at: the approach you would otherwise not have known about until it arrived.
